Selective cyclo-oxygenase 2 (COX-2) inhibitors block the production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. However, they do not produce the side-effects, especially upper gastrointestinal ulcers, associated with traditional NSAIDs Celecoxib, a highly selective COX-2 inhibitor was introduced last year for relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in adults. Rofecoxib, the second COX-2 inhibitor is indicated for pain relief, primary dysmenorrhoea and the treatment of the signs and symptoms of chronic osteoarthritis.
